The Cost of Now is a newsletter. We collect only what we need to send it to you: your email address. That's it. We don't sell it. We don't share it. You can unsubscribe at any time.

1. What we collect

When you subscribe to The Cost of Now, we collect:

  • Your email address — the only personal information required
  • The timestamp of your subscription
  • Standard server logs (IP address, user agent) collected by our hosting provider, retained briefly for infrastructure and anti-spam purposes

We do not require or request your name, location, age, or any other personal details to subscribe.

2. How we use it

Your email is used exclusively to:

  • Send you the weekly Cost of Now letter
  • Confirm your subscription
  • Occasionally send administrative messages (e.g. notifying you of changes to this policy or the newsletter)

We do not send advertising. We do not send promotions on behalf of third parties. We do not rent or sell your email address to anyone.

3. Third parties

  • Netlify — hosts this website and processes the subscription form. Emails you submit are captured via Netlify Forms and stored in our Netlify dashboard. See Netlify's Privacy Policy.
  • Newsletter delivery platform (TBD) — we are in the process of selecting a dedicated email-delivery provider (Buttondown, Beehiiv, or similar). When we migrate, this policy will be updated to identify them, and your email will be transferred to the new platform for the sole purpose of delivering the newsletter.
  • Google Fonts — typography is fetched from Google's CDN, which may log request metadata (IP, user-agent) for infrastructure purposes.

4. Cookies & tracking

The Cost of Now does not use advertising cookies or third-party analytics at this time. No visitor tracking is active on this site. If we add analytics in the future, we will update this policy and use a privacy-respecting provider (e.g. Plausible or Fathom) with IP anonymization.

5. Data retention

We retain your email address for as long as you are subscribed. If you unsubscribe, your email is removed from active distribution within a reasonable period and fully deleted within 90 days, except where retention is required for legal or anti-abuse purposes.

6. Your rights

Depending on where you live (GDPR for the EU/UK, CCPA for California, and similar laws elsewhere), you may have rights to:

  • Access the information we hold about you (essentially: your email + subscription date)
  • Request correction or deletion
  • Object to processing
  • Request portability

Every newsletter email includes a one-click unsubscribe link. For any other request, email hello@1337.ai and we'll respond within 30 days.

7. Children's privacy

The Cost of Now is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them. If you believe a child has subscribed, please contact us and we'll remove the subscription promptly.

8. International users

This site is hosted in the United States by Netlify. By subscribing, you consent to your email being transferred to and processed in the United States (and, once we migrate, by our newsletter delivery provider's infrastructure, which may also be in the United States).

9. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be noted prominently on the site, and — if we've collected your email — communicated directly to subscribers.
